SINOPSIS

A little girl in Oregon in 1974 uses a Polaroid camera to follow an enigmatic voice and comes upon a strange man wearing light makeup.

FBI agent Lee Harker, who may be clairvoyant, is given a case involving many murder-suicides in Oregon in the 1990s by her boss, William Carter. In every case, a father kills his family and himself, leaving behind a letter signed "Longlegs," whose handwriting doesn't correspond to any of the family members, and containing Satanic coding. Lee finds out that the nine-year-old daughter of each family was born on the 14th of the month, that all of the killings happened six days prior to or following the birthday, and that the murders, with one date missing, create an occult triangular sign on a calendar.

Lee receives a coded birthday card from Longlegs while speaking with her mother Ruth. Longlegs warns Lee that disclosing the code's source could result in her mother's murder. Lee and Carter discover a doll containing a high-energy metal orb after following a clue. Carter suspects Lee's connection to Longlegs after going to a mental hospital to examine Carrie Anne Camera, the only survivor of Longlegs's attacks, who had earlier had a visit from someone using Lee's identity. Carter invites Lee to speak with Ruth after learning that, on Lee's ninth birthday, Ruth had reported an intruder to the police.

When Ruth shows Lee her childhood possessions, she discovers a Polaroid of the pallid guy, identifying Longlegs as the man who had been to see a young Lee on her birthday. Lee turns in the picture, which results in Longlegs's detention. Lee worries that day—the missing date—will see another murder committed by an accomplice. Before taking his own life in the questioning room, Longlegs makes the assertion that he serves "the man downstairs" and makes a suggestion about Ruth's involvement. Lee finds out shortly after that Carrie killed herself.

When Agent Browning takes Lee to her mother's house, Lee sees Ruth use a shotgun to kill Browning. After that, Ruth destroys a toy that looked like young Lee, which makes Lee unconscious. Lee discovers that Ruth has been Longlegs's sidekick since she was a young child. Ruth was obliged to agree with Longlegs' wishes in order to save Lee, forcing her to make a decision between her daughter's life and his. Living in the Harker basement, Longlegs crafted Satanic dolls that Ruth, disguising herself as a nun, gave to homes, inspiring the fathers to kill their families. While manipulating her with his powers, Lee's doll prevented her from remembering Longlegs.
