The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) BluRay

Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark become targets of the Capitol after their victory in the 74th Hunger Games sparks a rebellion in the Districts of Panem.

SYNOPSIS THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE

Sometime after Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark return to District 12 following their victory in the 74th Hunger Games, President Snow visits Katniss and explains that her actions in the Games have inspired uprisings. He orders her to use the upcoming Victory Tour to convince him that her actions were out of love and not defiance against the Capitol, warning her that her friends, family, and everyone else in District 12 will otherwise face execution. During the tour, Katniss' mentor Haymitch warns her that Victors of the games must serve as mentors to future tributes and that their show of love will be forced to continue for the rest of their lives.

Peacekeepers under Commander Romulus Thread begin to mercilessly raid homes and other places throughout District 12, and Katniss's friend Gale is publicly whipped after tackling Thread to stop him from killing civilians. Haymitch, Peeta, and Katniss use their influence as Hunger Games victors to save Gale from further torture and death. Thread calmly gives in, but then declares curfew on District 12's residents under threat of death on sight. The upcoming Hunger Games - the 75th overall and the third "Quarter Quell" is announced, and will involve tributes selected from previous victors. Katniss devotes herself to ensuring Peeta survives. On Reaping Day, Haymitch's name is drawn, but Peeta immediately volunteers to take his place. Haymitch reveals that the tributes are angry about being forced to return to the Games and will most likely attempt to stop it. For her pre-Games interview, Katniss wears a wedding dress, as ordered by Snow, but her stylist Cinna sets it to transform into a symbol of a mockingjay. Peeta announces that he and Katniss, who had previously announced their engagement during their Victory Tour in an unsuccessful attempt to quell the Districts, are expecting a child. The citizens then protest for the Games to be stopped to no avail. Just before Katniss enters the arena, Cinna is severely beaten by Peacekeepers in front of her as punishment for his tampering with her dress and then dragged away.

In the Games, Katniss allies with District 4 tributes Finnick Odair and the elderly Mags, his mentor. When the arena's forcefield shocks Peeta, stopping his heart, Finnick resuscitates him. The group is forced to flee from a poisonous fog; when Peeta cannot go on, Mags sacrifices herself so that Finnick can help him. When mandrills attack, Peeta is saved by the unexpected sacrifice of a tribute from District 6. The group escapes to the beach, where Finnick greets District 3's Wiress and Beetee and District 7's Johanna Mason. Wiress repeats the phrase "tick-tock", leading Katniss to realize that the arena is designed like a clock, with regular hazards each hour contained within their respective zones. Wiress's throat is slit by Gloss, one of the Careers. Gloss is then fatally shot by Katniss while Johanna kills his sister, Cashmere. Finnick is injured by another Career, and the Gamemakers spin the clock to disorient the tributes.

Beetee suggests luring the rest of the Careers to the wet beach and electrocuting them, taking advantage of the lightning that strikes every 12 hours. The group separates to prepare the trap, laying down wire. When Brutus and Enobaria emerge, Johanna stuns Katniss, cuts the tracker out of her arm and flees. Katniss finds an unconscious Beetee. Unable to find Peeta, and hearing a cannon, Katniss almost kills Finnick, thinking he betrayed them, but he reminds her to "remember who the real enemy is". Katniss attaches wire to an arrow and shoots it into the arena roof just as lightning strikes. The lightning is conducted along the wire, causing the arena shields to fail and the roof to fall, and Katniss is knocked unconscious.

Katniss awakens in an aircraft to find Haymitch, Beetee (still unconscious), Finnick, and Plutarch Heavensbee, the head Gamemaker, who is revealed to be a rebel against Snow. He tells her they are bound for District 13, headquarters of the new rebellion, and that half the tributes were aware of the plan to escape with Katniss, who symbolizes the growing rebellion. They were unable to rescue Peeta and Johanna, as they still have their trackers on them. A distraught Katniss is sedated after nearly attacking Haymitch for violating his promise to save Peeta. She awakens to find Gale by her side, who reassures her that her family is safe but that District 12 has been destroyed by the Capitol.

False Positive (2021) BluRay

As if getting pregnant weren't complicated enough, Lucy sets out to uncover the unsettling truth about her fertility doctor.

False Positive is a 2021 American horror film, directed by John Lee, from a screenplay by Lee and Ilana Glazer. It stars Glazer, Justin Theroux, Pierce Brosnan, and Sophia Bush.

SYNOPSIS FALSE POSITIVE

Copywriter Lucy Martin lives with her husband Adrian in Manhattan. The couple has been trying to conceive for two years and decide to seek out Dr. John Hindle, Adrian's former teacher and a leading fertility doctor. Lucy becomes pregnant after Dr. Hindle inseminates her, using a technique he invented. During an ultrasound she discovers she is pregnant with triplets: male twins and a female. Hindle suggests a selective reduction; either the twins or the daughter should be terminated to ensure a healthy pregnancy and birth. Adrian and Lucy decide to have the girl. Lucy joins a group of expecting mothers, where she befriends Corgan, who got pregnant using IVF. Lucy discovers Grace Singleton, a spiritual midwife with a natural approach and develops a fascination with her.

During the reduction, Lucy passes out and hears Adrian and Hindle talk. Later, she bleeds excessively from her uterus, which Hindle dismisses as a common instance. Adrian presents Hindle with an award and Lucy grows wary of him. Lucy finds a safe in Adrian's office and shares with Corgan that she has growing suspicions that Hindle did something to her unborn daughter and Adrian is aware. After Lucy has further complications, Hindle blames this on antenatal depression and prescribes her medication. After having a dream where she sees Hindle and Adrian having sex, Corgan opens Adrian's safe and finds a file on her, including evidence that she is being monitored. Corgan takes the file to show her lawyer husband and suggests that Lucy behave normally until she knows more. Lucy confronts Adrian, admitting she doesn't feel safe with Hindle.

During her baby shower, Lucy realizes that Corgan knows her real name, despite never having shared it. Lucy confronts her and Corgan shares that she is with Hindle too and that she gave the file to Adrian because she was worried about her mental state. Lucy experiences contractions and goes to Grace to give birth. She discovers she is giving birth to the twins instead of the female baby. Before she can birth the second twin, Grace urges them to a hospital after strong bleeding but Adrian brings her to Hindle, who delivers the second baby. Disillusioned and depressed, Lucy talks to Grace but realizes that she imagined her as different than she is. Lucy goes to Hindle's clinic to confront him, where she learns Adrian and Hindle will merge and operate together.

She sneaks into a secret room in the clinic, where she finds her placenta and reduced fetus. Hindle reveals it was his sperm used for inseminating Lucy, as he does with all his patients, believing his genes to be superior. He attempts to drug her but she restrains him to a medical chair, after which she is attacked by a nurse, Dawn. She drugs Dawn and beats Hindle bloody, destroying his sperm and leaving the office with the fetus. Arriving at home, she imagines herself releasing the twins to float out of the window. When Adrian comes home, Lucy gives him the twins and orders him to leave. She then picks up the fetus and attempts to breastfeed it and hallucinates that it begins to suckle.

Freaks (2018) BluRay

A bold girl discovers a bizarre, threatening, and mysterious new world beyond her front door after she escapes her father's protective and paranoid control.

Freaks is a 2018 science fiction thriller film written and directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein. Starring Emile Hirsch, Bruce Dern, Grace Park, Amanda Crew, and Lexy Kolker, the film follows a seven-year-old girl (Kolker) who leaves her home for the first time after being kept inside by her father (Hirsch).

SYNOPSIS FREAKS

Seven-year-old Chloe Lewis has spent her entire life confined inside an abandoned house with her father Henry, who forbids her from leaving under the threat of being killed by "the bad men". Despite her father's warnings, Chloe longs to experience the world outside her home and desires a maternal figure in her life, due to never meeting her deceased mother Mary. To help Chloe have a normal life, Henry seeks to educate her on general social behavior so she will one day be able to pose as a member of the neighboring Reed family. Chloe observes strange occurrences in the house, such as Henry expelling blood from his eyes and a ghost-like female figure in her closet. Over time, she learns about "abnormals", individuals with superhuman abilities who are hunted by the government's Abnormal Defense Force (ADF) and contained in an underground facility known as Madoc Mountain.

When Chloe eventually manages to leave the house, she discovers her own abnormal power of telepathy at the prodding of an elderly ice cream truck driver. The ice cream truck driver reveals himself as Chloe's maternal grandfather Alan, who believes his daughter is still alive, and Chloe realizes that the "ghost" in her closet is actually Mary being held captive at Madoc Mountain. Henry and Alan are also revealed as abnormals, identified by their bleeding eyes, with Henry using his time-altering powers to cause only a few months to pass outside of the house during his seven years with Chloe. Upon discovering that Chloe left the house and has been in contact with Alan, Henry brings her to the Reeds, only to be turned away when Chloe uses her abilities on the Reed matriarch Nancy. Nancy subsequently contacts the ADF to deal with Chloe and her family, but Chloe tricks the agents into believing the Reeds are abnormals and they kill Nancy.

Using her telepathic abilities, Chloe begins to help Mary escape from Madoc Mountain, but is hindered by the arrival of ADF Agent Cecilia Ray at the house. When Henry and Alan attempt to deal with her, the agent reveals to Henry that she knows the truth about him and his daughter and a drone strike will be ordered on the house if they kill her. Ray offers to place Chloe under governmental care, but upon realizing Henry and Alan are stalling, a scuffle ensues that leads to Ray killing Alan and mortally wounding Henry before she is killed by Chloe. Henry manages to delay the ADF agents long enough for Chloe to ensure Mary's escape, then uses his abilities to manipulate time and carry his daughter out of the house as it is destroyed by the drone.

After Henry succumbs to his injuries, Mary arrives using her flight abilities and kills the remaining ADF agents. Mary promises to keep Chloe hidden at a new location, but Chloe refuses to continue hiding, believing that no one can stop them from living wherever they want. Moved by her daughter's confidence, Mary agrees and flies off with Chloe.

Xiao Mei (2018) BluRay

Xiao Mei is a girl, frail and mysterious. And now she is missing. Through the interviews and memories of nine individuals who all had connections to her, the puzzle of Xiao Mei's life is gradually pieced together. None of them know where Xiao Mei has gone, but all of them desperately hope she is okay, so that everything will be all right.

REVIEW XIAO MEI

No matter how bad, art-house films are usually quite watchable for the first half hour or so. If nothing else, the innovative storytelling techniques and avant-garde aesthetics will keep the viewer’s attention for at least that long. But a good movie still requires a coherent, gripping storyline that actually goes somewhere. This is the only area — but the most crucial one — where Xiao Mei (小美) falls flat as the story builds intrigue but provides too few answers before abruptly ending.

The premise of the story is simple: a young, drug-addicted woman named Xiao Mei, played by Cincin Jao (饒星星), has gone missing. An unidentified cameraman interviews nine people associated with her, each with different motives and connections, to try and piece together what happened.

The opening scene is probably the most entertaining part of the film, as Xiao Mei’s landlord, portrayed by Chen Yi-wen (陳以文) with a thick Cantonese accent, describes his interactions with Xiao Mei while getting a head massage at a traditional barber shop. He occasionally glances at the camera when he gets agitated, and it’s soon revealed that he’s being interviewed. The camera follows him to Xiao Mei’s former apartment while Chen does a splendid job as the unintentional funnyman, delivering absurd one-liners and showing off his father’s martial arts skills, all while moping about how hard life is as a landlord and how much trouble Xiao Mei has caused him. A touch of surrealism is employed when the landlord recalls a previous encounter with Xiao Mei, and past and present merge into one scene.

This blend of past and present and other surreal devices are seen throughout the movie, and are a reason to keep watching. In a flashback sex scene, Xiao Mei’s boyfriend actually pauses mid-action to speak to the interviewer as if he were in the present. The cameraman also seems to be able to film his subjects from improbable positions, for example, when the lens is somehow directly facing the boyfriend while he zips through town on his motorcycle. Characters could be talking to both Xiao Mei and the cameraman in the same shot, then suddenly be interrupted by a passerby. This device is probably necessary for the film to work, otherwise it would just be a series of monotonous interrogations.

Commercial director Maren Hwang (黃榮昇) should be praised for pushing the boundaries and trying new forms of storytelling in his first feature effort. The cinematography, special effects and score are rich and alluring, and the surrealism are adroitly employed so that scenes are offbeat without being absurd. Taipei and other locales in Taiwan are filmed in a gritty and bleak, yet still colorful and dreamy fashion, providing atmospheric respite from the succession of interviews. It’s a feast for the senses, and there’s a reason Xiao Mei has made it into various international film festivals, including the Berlinale. It also claimed the Crossovers Grand Prix at the Strasbourg European Fantastic Film Festival and best cinematography award at the Taipei Film Awards.

However, while stylistically and technically impressive, there is not enough substance to back the film up. The performances seem to weaken after Chen’s interview, and by the fourth or fifth subject, the magic is wearing off as the suspense builds too slowly, even waning at points despite Hwang introducing new flourishes and layers to each vignette in a bid to keep them unique. The way they are put together just doesn’t translate into a full narrative. It’s as if Hwang came up with a brilliant idea for a short film, but was unable to flesh it out into a full-length feature.

Time Trap (2017) BluRay

A professor enters a cave and goes missing. Some of his students come looking for him and get trapped in the cave as well.

Time Trap is a 2017 science fiction action adventure film, directed by Ben Foster and Mark Dennis. Starring Brianne Howey, Cassidy Gifford, Olivia Draguicevich, Reiley McClendon, and Andrew Wilson, it tells the story of a group of students in a remote area of Texas searching for their missing professor. They then discover a mysterious cave by accident. While exploring the cave, the group experience a series of bizarre and dangerous events related to time and space distortion.

SYNOPSIS TIME TRAP

Hopper, an archaeology professor, is exploring a remote cave system on the trail of missing hippies from the 1970s. After discovering what appears to be a cowboy paused in place in a tunnel, he returns to town and dismisses his graduate students, Taylor and Jackie, stating that their research is done.

Several days later, as Hopper has not returned, Taylor and Jackie go looking for him, with their friend Cara, who brings her sister, Veeves, and her friend Furby. Following Hopper's trail to the campsite by a cave, they find an entrance with climbing ropes leading inside. They decide to follow it, but Furby chooses to stay behind as backup for the base camp. They lower themselves into the cave, hearing strange noises. When Furby does not answer their radio calls, Jackie tries to climb back out, but the rope frays, and she falls, injuring herself and Taylor. Calling for help, they receive a transmission from inside the cave and follow it.

At a different junction, they discover another opening to the cave and Furby, dead with a broken neck. Watching his video recordings, they notice several days elapsed from his perspective, while only about an hour had lapsed in the cave. He began researching the hippies' belongings, discovering they were Hopper's parents and that he is searching for his missing sister. His parents were following legends of the Fountain of Youth and speculated that this cave system was the root of the story. Furby found another cave opening. After several days, he went into the cave to retrieve keys for a vehicle but fell when his rope severed.

Taylor deduces the cave is inside a time distortion where events move more slowly. With few options, Cara free-climbs out of the cave to get a GPS signal. Outside, the terrain has become barren, and there is no signal. Returning to the cave, comparing video recordings, Cara has experienced 30 minutes on the surface while she had been gone only a few seconds from their viewpoint, confirming Taylor's theory. Reviewing Furby's footage again, they learn he survived the fall but was murdered by a caveman. Cara and Taylor deduce the time difference is much more drastic than they suspected and entire years are passing within seconds, meaning the few hours they have been in the cave is enough to span several hundred or thousand years outside.

Hearing more howling, Cara prepares to climb out again for help but is interrupted by a futuristic humanoid spaceman descending via a retractable ladder. A caveman suddenly attacks, but is subdued non-lethally. They flee just to find a whole tribe of cavemen inspecting the dead bodies of the cowboy and Hopper's parents. Discovered, Taylor fights the cavemen and is killed. The spaceman returns, protects the others from the cavemen, and then places Taylor into a healing pool of water. More cavemen attack, and the spaceman is fatally wounded, but uses his dying breaths to show them several media clips about their disappearance and indicating that humans have become space-faring.

Taylor finds Hopper injured in front of another time dilation, containing his long-missing sister and a legion of conquistadors in battle with the cavemen over control of a waterfall, the source of the time distortion, at the center of the cave system. Hopper explains the field is strongest here, making rescue of his sister impossible; he tells Taylor to go and save the others, as he is also dying. Preparing to leave the cave with the spaceman's ladder, the students are attacked by cavemen before they can get through; Cara is pulled through the portal by future beings before she can help her friends. From their perspective, she reappears through the portal, differently dressed and with rope-like mechanisms which pull her friends through.

A short time later, Furby awakens, along with Hopper and Hopper's family, all having been retrieved and resurrected with the healing waters. The others arrive, happily explaining they are in a space station and have a lot to talk about.

Ghajini (2008) BluRay

A short-term memory loss patient sets out on his journey to avenge the death of his beloved girl.

Ghajini is a 2008 Indian Hindi-language action thriller film written and directed by A. R. Murugadoss, jointly produced by Allu Aravind, Tagore Madhu and Madhu Mantena. A remake of Murugadoss's own 2005 Tamil film of the same name which in turn is inspired by the 2000 film Memento and 1951 British film Happy Go Lovely. It stars Aamir Khan, Asin reprising her original role in her Hindi film debut, Jiah Khan and Pradeep Rawat, co-starring Tinnu Anand, Sunil Grover, Khalid Siddiqui and Riyaz Khan.

The score and soundtrack were composed by A. R. Rahman, while Aamir co-wrote an altered climax. Murugadoss, had written half of the film's story when he watched Memento, and claimed to merely use the character due to his short term memory loss condition. In the film, a businessman suffering from anterograde amnesia sets out to avenge his girlfriend with the aid of photographs from a Polaroid Instant camera and permanent tattoos on his body.

SYNOPSIS GHAJINI

Sunita, a medical student, is investigating the anterograde amnesia case of Sanjay Singhania, the chairman of Air Voice, a telecommunications company. She does so against her professor Dr. Debkumar Mitra's wishes, in spite of Sanjay being under criminal investigation. Sanjay, who loses his memory every 15 minutes, uses a system of photographs, notes, and tattoos on his body to recover his memory and remember his mission of avenging the murder of his fiancé Kalpana Shetty, who was killed by a criminal kingpin, Ghajini Dharmatma.

Police officer Arjun Yadav, who is investigating a murder that Sanjay committed, knocks Sanjay unconscious in a scuffle at his apartment and finds two diaries in his drawer. He learns that Sanjay, a successful entrepreneur, met Kalpana, a struggling model, after he planned on installing an advertising billboard above her apartment. When his agents arrive at Kalpana's shooting site to negotiate with her about it, Kalpana's boss, advertising veteran Satveer Kohli, misinterprets this as a romantic advance and, in a view of fame and fortune, encourages Kalpana to accept the overture. Kalpana also decides to pose as Sanjay's girlfriend.

As soon as Sanjay finds out about the false rumor, he plans to meet Kalpana to confront her but fails, as he starts to like her after seeing her altruistic nature. He poses as Sachin Chauhan, a newcomer model, and lies to Kalpana about himself. Soon, he falls deeper in love with her. At the end of the first diary, on 31st December, Sanjay, still playing Sachin, proposes to Kalpana who, taken aback by such a sudden gesture, asks for the night to think over it. He decides that if she would agree, then he would reveal his true identity to her, but, if not, then he would quietly walk away from her life as Sachin.

As Arjun starts reading the second diary, Sanjay attacks him and ties him up. Sunita locates the apartment, finding Arjun and learning of Sanjay's murder plot. She steals his diaries and frees Arjun. As she and Arjun escape, Arjun is hit by a bus. Sunita then informs Ghajini about the fact that Sanjay is coming to him to kill him. Sanjay finds out about this and goes to attack her at her dormitory, where he is arrested and given a sedative. Ghajini is informed by the police about Sanjay's belongings and he poses as Sanjay's friend. Soon Sanjay's employees and doctor arrive and take him home. There, Ghajini and his men destroy his pictures and cover his tattoos, thus leaving him with no memory about the past.

After Sanjay gets arrested, Sunita reads the diaries. She finds out about Kalpana. In the second diary, Kalpana accepts the proposal, but on the condition that she marry only after she purchases three ambassador cars, due to a past commitment. One thing leads to another and Sanjay decides on taking her the truth about himself later. The diary ends abruptly when Sanjay has to go overseas for a few days.

After some research, Sunita eventually learns Kalpana travelled to Goa, where she stumbled across and freed a group of girls from a sex trafficking ring orchestrated by Ghajini. Sanjay returns home and finds Kalpana stabbed. Ghajini hits Sanjay in the head with an iron rod which results in brain injury, before killing Kalpana with the same rod, in front of him. Feeling guilty of doubting him, Sunita reminds Sanjay of Kalpana's murder and helps him track Ghajini to his local area. Sanjay then kills his men but has a memory loss fit while searching for Ghajini, who takes advantage of the situation and stabs Sanjay. As he prepares to kill Sunita the same way he killed Kalpana, Sanjay recovers his memory and kills Ghajini with the iron rod.

Six months later, Sanjay returns as the chairman of Air Voice and is volunteering at an orphanage named after Kalpana, helping everyone like she did, and trying to heal. Sunita gifts him the cement pad with Sanjay and Kalpana's foot impressions and he feels Kalpana beside him, as the screen pans out in a fading sunset.
