SINOPSIS

In October 1958, at the height of the Cold War, a group of young Yugoslav scientists working on a secret project at the Vinča Nuclear Institute near Belgrade are exposed to a lethal dose of uranium radiation due to an accident. The incident is kept secret by the authorities, and the gravely injured scientists are covertly sent to the Curie Institute in Paris for experimental medical treatment, as their condition is critical and their days are numbered.

In Paris, the patients are placed under the care of Professor Georges Mathé, a respected oncologist and a strong opponent of nuclear weapons. Mathé initially holds contempt for the scientists, believing they were working on an atomic bomb. The Yugoslav scientists, in turn, doubt his true intentions and worry they might be used as human experiments.

As the medical team struggles to find a cure and the scientists' health deteriorates, Mathé proposes a radical and risky solution: the world's first-ever allogeneic bone marrow transplant between unrelated donors and hosts, a procedure never before attempted on humans. The film explores the moral and ethical dilemmas faced by both the doctors and the patients, highlighting a story of humanity, selflessness, and the complex political landscape of the era that ultimately led to a significant medical breakthrough in treating radiation exposure and, later, leukemia.
